Pursuant to MoU dated 03.11.2012, Chhattisgarh East-West Railway Limited (CEWRL) was formed on 25.03.2013 as SPVs for implementing the East-West Corridor.
CEWRL is a Joint Venture Company of SECL (64%), IRCON (26%) and CSIDC (10%)
The East-West Corridor Project will be instrumental in reducing the burden on the existing single evacuation rail link in the region which extends from Gevra Road station to Champa where it joins the main Kolkata-Mumbai trunk line. The existing rail link is already functioning at a capacity utilization of more than 100%.
The East-West Corridor Project will provide a shorter alternative route for coal transportation by joining Gevra Road to the Bilaspur- Annupur- Katni line at the Pendra Road station and thus enabling seamless movement of coal from SECL‘s mines in Mand-Raigarh & Korba coalfields of Chhattisgarh to various end use projects in the states of Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab.
The development of the rail corridor is very crucial for this region as it is anticipated to bring about a 3-pronged development in region in the form of enhancement of coal production for SECL, decongestion and expansion of the railway network for Indian Railways and infrastructure development for the State of Chhattisgarh.
MoR has notified the East-West Rail Corridor as a ‘Special Railway Project’ to provide national infrastructure for a public purpose.
